Is IONOS a good web host?
Good for quantity, unproven for speed. IONOS gives every plan unlimited websites, unlimited traffic, a free domain, a wildcard certificate and daily backups, and the cheapest plan renews at $8 a month, so it is the obvious pick for someone who runs a dozen small sites. The reasons for caution are also on paper: the one dated independent test we can cite found it slow and unable to hold 50 concurrent users, the money-back guarantee covers one billing cycle, and the contract says technical support is at IONOS’s discretion. Everything below is a published fact we checked on 14 October 2026 or a gap we name.
What do you get on each plan?

Every plan is Linux, container based, with NVMe storage, unlimited websites and traffic, a free domain for the first year, a DV wildcard SSL certificate, 5,000 subdomains, daily backups of storage and databases with recovery, daily malware scanning, DDoS protection, geo-redundancy, SSH, 200 SFTP accounts, WP-CLI, Git, Perl, Python, PHP 8.2 to 8.4 (older versions on paid extended support), a 262,144-inode limit, 24/7 support and the 30-day guarantee. The tiers differ by storage (100 to 500 GB), CPU priority (1x, 3x, 5x, 10x), databases (10 to 500, each 2 GB), mailboxes (1 to 5, each 2 GB), cron jobs (10 to 100) and extras: Starter and above add the CDN, Ultimate adds unlimited wildcard certificates and advanced malware scanning with automatic removal.
Two things to notice. The hero copy says “unlimited storage” while the table says 100 to 500 GB; section 3.1 of the general terms explains that IONOS grows the web space in increments once you pass 75 percent of the allocation, so the printed figure is the starting point. And email is tight: one 2 GB mailbox on Essential.

The plan page sells a 12-month term and prints three numbers per plan: the promotional monthly price for the first 12 months, the “regular” price it is discounted from ($10, $12, $16 and $20), and the price after the first year ($8, $10, $14 and $18), which is what you pay from month 13. The page’s own pricing data confirms the same figures: a one-year minimum term, a 12-month offer, and an after-price. The page has a Pay Monthly toggle; in our capture it showed the same figures as the annual view, so we cannot state a separate month-to-month price and the table above lists the 12-month term only. State and local sales taxes may apply.
Three-year cost on the entry plan
| Route | Years 1 to 3 |
|---|---|
| 12-month term, then the after-price | $48 + $96 + $96 = $240 |
Plus is the curious one: $1 a month for a year, then $14. Over three years it costs $348, more than Starter’s $312, so the headline price favours the plan with the highest renewal.
How do refunds work?
The money-back terms are short. Claims must reach customer support within 30 days of the initial order, and the refund goes to the payment account on file. It is limited to certain setup fees and the monthly fee for the first billing cycle, which is narrower than most hosts’ guarantees, and it excludes professional services, spent third-party budgets, domains, SSL certificates, extra features and usage-based fees. Switching packages ends eligibility.
The general terms add the rest. The default contract term is one month, renewing monthly; extended-term packages renew for equal terms unless auto-renew is turned off, with a notice 30 to 60 days before the end of term posted in the control panel. Fees for extended-term packages are due up front and are non-refundable if you leave early. Either side may terminate with 30 days’ written notice; cancellation is through the control panel or by email from the registered address.
What is the infrastructure?
IONOS says it hosts in its own regional data centers in the US and Europe, operates 31 data centers in all, and holds ISO 27001 certification for them. Its October 2023 release describes the Lenexa, Kansas site as the one that “has been and will continue to be used for IONOS hosting products” and as its third US location for the cloud platform; the about page says the Lenexa facility was commissioned for over 40,000 servers. Cybernews lists Las Vegas, Newark and Lenexa in the US and Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris, London, Worcester and Logroño in Europe. Web hosting customers do not pick a location.
The plan page promises 99.99 percent uptime and section 4.6 of the general terms backs it with a credit proportional to the downtime in that month, on request, to be spent on IONOS services. Scheduled maintenance, customer-caused downtime and email or FTP interruptions are excluded.
How fast and reliable is it?
Cybernews, in a review by Meda Arce updated on 12 March 2026, had its research team monitor a Plus plan site for two weeks:
- 100 percent uptime with no outages over the two weeks.
- An average server response of 1,749 ms, which the page contrasts with 181.48 ms in its previous round and calls far behind the market.
- Largest Contentful Paint of 6,327 ms on a fully built WordPress site, measured from Virginia.
- k6 load tests at 30 and 50 virtual users, both with severe slowdowns, a P95 around 5,000 ms and thousands of HTTP errors. The author says another round is planned to see whether the drop persists.
HostScore’s review, updated on 14 October 2026, scores IONOS 71.3 percent and describes reliable uptime without publishing intervals or figures. We found no WPBeginner, HostingStep or Kripesh Adwani review of IONOS with a dated measurement.
Read together: the only independent window is short and its latest speed figures are poor, while its uptime was perfect and the host’s own guarantee is the strictest in our list. Treat speed as unproven rather than bad until a second source or our own window exists.
How good is the support?
IONOS offers 24/7 support by phone, chat and email, and markets a personal consultant for each customer; the plan page lists 24/7 support and a help center on every tier. The contract is less generous than the marketing: section 3.1 of the general terms says IONOS is not obliged to provide customer service beyond what the section specifies, that requests for technical support may be refused with or without reason, and that support once started may be ended without notice. HostScore reports mixed feedback with complaints about slow responses, and its own page shows 21 negative user submissions against 7 positive. We have not timed tickets ourselves and will add real ones to the support table on this page.
Who owns IONOS, and where is it?
IONOS Group SE, listed on the Frankfurt exchange since 8 February 2023 and in the SDAX since September 2023, a member of the United Internet group, headquartered in Germany. The brand descends from 1&1, founded in 1988; the US arm launched as 1&1 Inc. in Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania in 2003, acquired mail.com in 2010, and the 1&1 product lines merged with ProfitBricks to become IONOS in 2018 (the public rename followed in January 2020). The US contracting entity is IONOS Inc., Two Logan Square, 100 N 18th St, Suite 400, Philadelphia. The company page counts 4,300 employees, 22 million domains and over 6.2 million customer contracts.
What is missing or unclear?
- A month-to-month price. The toggle exists, but our capture showed the annual figures in both states.
- Which data center a US web hosting account lands in, and whether that can be requested.
- Whether a caching layer exists on shared plans; the table names compression and HTTP/2 only.
- A second independent measurement to confirm or contradict Cybernews’s March 2026 figures.
- HostIdea’s own monitoring, support timing and load testing have not started.
Who should choose IONOS, and who should wait?
Choose it if you run many small, low-traffic sites and want the domain, SSL and backups bundled at a renewal under $10: Essential does that, and Starter adds the CDN and triple CPU priority for $2 more at renewal. The backing of a listed operator with its own data centers is a real advantage for a long-term home.
Wait if any one site matters under load, or if you want a refund of the whole first term. Hostinger renews Premium at $10.99 with published measurements behind it; Bluehost has a 30-day refund on the full term and measurements from two sources; HostArmada gives a 45-day window and a choice of nine locations.
How we scored this review
The scores on this page are provisional. Performance reflects Cybernews’s latest round, slow response and a failed load test, held above the floor because the same publication measured 181 ms earlier and plans a retest. Uptime rests on a two-week 100 percent window and the 99.99 percent written credit. Features credit the unlimited sites, the domain, the wildcard SSL and daily backups, and deduct for the mailboxes, the missing migration and the fixed location. Value weighs the $8 renewal for unlimited sites against the narrow guarantee. Support reflects the channels against the contract language and the public feedback, not timed tickets. Each score will be recomputed when our own data exists, and the review history on this page will show the change.
