Is Bluehost a good web host?
For a first site, it is a sound default: the plans now carry the tools (staging, SSH, caching, CDN) that used to be upsells, the SLA is in the contract, and the renewals are printed on the cards. It is not the best value in this set, and the Starter tier gives up more than the price difference suggests. Everything in this review is a published fact we checked on the date given, a third-party measurement cited by name, or a gap we name as a gap. Bluehost’s site blocks plain fetches, so we read the plan page in a real browser.

Every plan lists AI site creation tools, a 99.99 percent uptime SLA, a free domain for the first year on a 12-month or 36-month term, a site migration tool, a free CDN, managed WordPress updates, Let’s Encrypt SSL, malware scanning, weekly backups, a free Yoast SEO plugin, a Pro Email trial, advanced static and object caching, SSH and WP-CLI, and a WordPress staging site. Business adds 24/7 phone support, AI-powered malware removal, a web application firewall, DDoS protection and a year of free domain privacy. eCommerce Essentials adds commerce tools. Bluehost states visit guidance (40K, 200K and 400K a month) rather than cores or RAM.
What does it cost?

|---|---|
| Starter | $3.99/mothen $9.99/mo |

eCommerce Essentials

The plan page shows one term, 36 months, with the renewal rate beside each price. Shorter terms exist (the free domain wording mentions 12 months, and the user agreement excludes monthly-term products from the refund), but their prices are not shown on the plan page, so the table above lists the 36-month term only. WPBeginner read Starter at $2.99 a month in July 2026, so the promotion moves.
Six-year cost on the entry plan
| Route | Years 1 to 6 |
|---|---|
| 36 months at $3.99, then 36 months at $9.99 | $143.64 + $359.64 = $503.28 |
How do refunds work?
Section-level wording in the user agreement of 21 August 2026: a full refund of all basic hosting fees paid if you cancel within the first thirty days of the initial term. The guarantee does not apply to Bluehost Cloud plans, products and services on a monthly term, domain registration fees, AI products and services, setup fees, or fees for additional services. Cancellation is by phone or online chat.
What does the SLA pay?
The user agreement guarantees 99.99 percent uptime for shared hosting and, when it is missed, a maximum of one coupon per month for 5 percent of the monthly hosting fee. Bluehost Cloud plans carry a 100 percent availability commitment with a 5 percent credit for thirty or more consecutive minutes of downtime. A 99.99 percent month allows about four minutes of downtime, so the bar is high; the compensation is not.
Where are the servers?
Shared hosting lets you choose a region at checkout. WPBeginner reports the options as North America, South America, Europe and Asia on Oracle Cloud, after Newfold Digital’s 2025 move to Oracle. Bluehost’s own help article for cloud and agency sites names Los Angeles, Dallas, Ashburn and Amsterdam, and its VPS and dedicated servers offer nine locations: Ashburn, Phoenix and Toronto in North America; London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt in Europe; Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai in Asia-Pacific. Bluehost does not publish a city list for shared plans.
How fast and reliable is it?
HostingStep’s review by Mohan Raj, updated on 7 September 2026, monitored a Starter site with Pingdom every 60 seconds from 1 October 2025 to 31 May 2026:
- 99.97 percent uptime over the 243 days, with 10 outages and 84 minutes of downtime.
- An average TTFB of 501 milliseconds from US locations.
- A load test with a 41 millisecond average response and no errors.
- Global cached TTFB of 224 milliseconds across 40 locations: 169 in the Americas, 176 in Europe, 306 in Asia Pacific.
WPBeginner’s review, rebuilt on July 2026 test data and updated on 6 August 2026, tested the Starter plan at the default US location:
- 100 percent uptime over 30 days of UptimeRobot checks every five minutes.
- A 599 millisecond average response time across six regions, strong in North America and notably slower in South America and Japan.
- A k6 load test at 50 virtual users with a 140 millisecond 95th-percentile response and no failed requests; a later run was blocked by Cloudflare’s DDoS protection.
- GTmetrix Largest Contentful Paint of 933 milliseconds on 21 July 2026, with a full load under one second.
Reliable, then, over both windows, and slower to first byte than SiteGround (369 ms), Hostinger (227 ms) or Flashcloud (142 ms) in the comparable six-region and single-month tests we cite elsewhere. HostingStep’s eight-month figure of 501 milliseconds sits between Hostinger’s 447 and SiteGround’s 745 on the same method.
How good is the support?
24/7 chat on every plan; 24/7 phone from Business upward. Trustpilot showed a 4.5 out of 5 score from more than 28,000 reviews on 13 October 2026. We have not timed tickets ourselves and will add real ones to the support table on this page.
Who owns Bluehost, and where is it?
Bluehost was founded in 2003 in Utah by Matt Heaton. Endurance International Group bought it in 2010; Endurance merged with Web.com in 2021 to form Newfold Digital, which owns Bluehost today. The user agreement names Bluehost Inc. at 5335 Gate Parkway, Jacksonville, Florida. Oracle’s chairman announced in March 2025 that Newfold was moving to Oracle Cloud, and Bluehost launched VPS and dedicated servers on Oracle Cloud in May 2025.
What is missing or unclear?
- Prices on the 12-month and monthly terms.
- Cores, RAM and inode limits behind the visit guidance.
- The city list for shared hosting regions.
- HostIdea’s own monitoring, support timing and load testing have not started.
Who should choose Bluehost, and who should look elsewhere?
Choose it for a first WordPress site if you value the bundled site-building tools and are comfortable with a 36-month term; buy Business rather than Starter if you want phone support and a firewall.
Look elsewhere if daily backups, a shorter commitment or faster response times matter: Hostinger is cheaper with daily backups from its second plan, SiteGround keeps 30 days of daily backups on every plan, and Flashcloud includes backups, a lifetime domain and an anytime refund.
How we scored this review
The scores on this page are provisional. Uptime credits the 100 percent third-party month and the contractual SLA; performance reflects the slower response times measured. Features credit staging and caching on every tier against weekly backups and the thin Starter. Value weighs the 36-month commitment and moderate renewals. Support reflects the channels, the Starter exclusion and a large rating sample, not timed tickets. Each score will be recomputed when our own data exists, and the review history on this page will show the change.
