No HostIdea monitoring window is open for these hosts yet. Uptime and response are published third-party measurements, one per host by a fixed rule (longest stated independent window, and its response figure or the most recent one); methods differ, so read them as a guide. Each review lists every source with its method.
A student project lasts a semester or a year, needs a shell and a runtime more often than a page builder, and should not cost a three-year commitment. This list ranks the nine hosts on the first-year price of a 12-month term, the refund window, what the entry plan includes for a developer and whether the domain costs extra, from their pricing pages and terms read on 13 October 2026.
One host sells a year for under $24 on a 12-month term (FastComet). Two others advertise $1.99 and $2.99 prices that need a four-year term, which is the trap this list exists to point out. Nobody on this list offers a verified student discount; if a host’s page shows one, read the renewal terms before claiming it.
1. FlashcloudBest if you keep the site
Start is $2.79 a month on a 12-month term with a domain that stays free, unlimited mailboxes, staging and daily backups, and unused months are refunded at any time if the project ends early. The best choice for a portfolio that outlives the course.
Shared and WordPress hosting with a free domain for life, 30-day backups and an anytime prorated refund
Best for: Small business sites; WordPress sites that want backups and a domain included; Owners who want the first site built for them; Audiences in North America, Europe or Southeast Asia
Starter is also $1.99 on a 12-month term, with thirty daily offsite backups, Node.js and SSH, and six locations to pick from. One site and 10 GB, no free domain.
cPanel hosting on LiteSpeed with 30 daily offsite backups and 12 locations; small disks, now part of World Host Group
Best for: Sites whose visitors are near one of its 12 locations; Owners who want phone support and cPanel; Small sites on a low first-year price; Developers who want Node.js and SSH on shared plans
Launch costs $4.99 a month on a 12-month term, the most here, but 90 days to change your mind, 100 GB and Python, Node.js, Ruby and Git on every plan make it the safest place to try a bigger project.
Employee-owned US host since 2001 with a 90-day refund, generous disks and US-based support; backups are a paid add-on
Best for: US sites that want a long refund window; Owners who value US-based phone support; Sites that need 100 GB or more on a cheap plan; Developers who want Python, Node.js, Ruby and Git on shared hosting
The simplest panel and $2.99 a month, but that price needs a 48-month term ($143.52 up front) and the 12-month price is higher. Fine for a site you will keep for years; not for a one-semester project.
Mini is $2.95 on a 36-month term, but the refund of unused time at any time makes the long term less of a trap than it looks. SSH and WP-CLI; no free domain on Mini.
Dallas and Sofia host with its own SPanel, an anytime prorated refund and a credit table that reaches 100 percent
Best for: Sites that will move to a managed cloud VPS on the same platform; Owners who want a refund they can take at any time; People who prefer a free control panel to cPanel fees; Audiences in the US or Europe
Starter at $1.99 needs a 48-month term ($95.52 up front) and renews at $13.99. Strong developer tooling (API, staging, SSH, Node.js from Pro), but the commitment is wrong for a student.
The former A2 Hosting under World Host Group: stated cores and RAM, 30-day backups, staging from Pro, phone support
Best for: Sites that will grow into a managed server on the same platform; Owners who want phone support and stated resources; Developers using the OpenAPI and MCP server access; Agencies on Max with the service level agreement
Managed-feel shared hosting on Google Cloud with daily backups and staging; the renewals are the price
Best for: WordPress sites that want backups, staging and a CDN included; Small businesses that value support reputation over price; Audiences near one of its eleven data centers; Agencies on GoGeek (Git, white label, priority support)
Newfold's WordPress-recommended host: three shared tiers on 36-month terms, weekly backups, a 5 percent SLA coupon
Best for: Beginners who want the WordPress.org-recommended default; Sites that expect to grow into Bluehost Cloud or a VPS; Owners who want AI site-building tools bundled; Audiences in North America
Essentials is $2.95 on a 36-month term; backups become a paid add-on after the first year and a domain fee applies if you cancel early. The least student-shaped terms on the list.
Canadian cPanel host with phone support in 16 countries and five data centers; backups cost extra after year one
Best for: Canadian sites that want Toronto hosting and PIPEDA alignment; Owners who want phone support in their own language; Small business sites that use the bundled email and office tools; Beginners on cPanel with a staged first year
Every host on this list is reviewed from its published terms, cited independent measurements and our own checks, with the source and date next to each figure. The order comes from the overall score plus an editorial judgement on fit for this use case, stated in each entry. Weights:
Is free hosting good enough for a student project?
For a static page, a free tier from a static host is fine. For anything with a database, PHP or a custom domain, a $24-a-year plan with SSH is cheaper than the hours lost to free-tier limits.
Do any of these hosts offer a student discount?
None of the ten publishes one on the pages we read. Some registrars and software vendors do; hosting discounts usually come as the introductory price everyone gets.
Which plan is best for learning server administration?
None of the shared plans: they hide the server. A cheap VPS is the right tool for that, and our list of hosts to grow into a VPS covers the options.
